Went to visit my grandparents and their little dog Rocky. Rocky is just a year old, and he's adorable, but a little much for my grandmother to handle sometimes, so Mom drives up now and again and tries to tire him out. So I played with Rocky and we watched Hairspray. Grandmom was greatly amused to see John Travolta and Christopher Walken tango. I'd forgotten how good that movie makes me feel.
Then back home for July 4th with the Nuances. Set off some incredibly dangerous fireworks that we got for about $3 apiece. Being 18, man, let me tell you. We almost set fire to the maple in my backyard. Pretty wonderful. Also Kazie brought one of the Naruto games with Hanabi in it. Man, there is something deeply sick about having a seven-year-old girl trying to hold her own against a bunch of teenaged ninjas. Naruto, played by Kazie, beat the ever-loving shit out of this little girl (played by me), and it was amusing as only child abuse can be.
But the real reason I'm writing is that I had a beautiful dream while at my grandmom's.
I dreamed that for some unfathomable reason, Neil Gaiman decided that I was All Right, and invited me over to stay at his house for a week or something. So, he was in his study writing, and I decided to help out and do some filing (as you do), and I noticed that I had three library books sitting there that I should return. One was Neverwhere, which I hid extremely quickly because it seemed a bit of a faux pas to be reading it at Neil Gaiman's place, y'know. The other two were Terry Prachett books, which I didn't hide fast enough, because Neil asked about them, and I explained that I read through an author's stuff and then move on to the next (I also admitted that he was the one I was working on at the moment, and hoped very feverently that he didn't make the connection to Good Omens). Anyway, he called up Terry Prachett and handed the phone to me. I, of course, was as embarrassed and thrilled as all hell about this.
So, I told Terry that I had a friend (Beth) who would kill me out of jealousy when she found out about this. Couldn't hear a damn thing he said, as it was an overseas call on a land-line, but I was too embarrassed to care. We had a brief conversation about Monstrous Regiment (he said it was his most boring book. I disagreed. Respectfully.) and then I handed the phone back to Neil, and then Rocky came in and I played with him while the authors talked.
Anyway, I woke up extremely disappointed, because now I couldn't tell Beth how awesome I got to be... because it was just a dream and that's not impressive at all.
For those keeping track, Friday was Neji's birthday, so I wrote him a filthy smut fic.
Saturday was Baki's birthday, so, as is traditional on Baki's birthday, I set off fireworks in my backyard, ate Chinese food, played Hanabi on a video game, and had an intense game of Uno with my friends.
As a completely unrelated sidenote that has nothing to do with the above post, I finished American Gods today. (Nothing at all to do with above post. Nothing.)

Public service announcement: There are some serious side effects to watching Twilight three times in a row, Rifftrax or no. I've become seriously attatched to the side Cullens and almost considered reading the books in the hopes that I could find out more about them. This passed... kinda. I no longer want to read the books, but I still really like Side!Cullens. It was for the best that we had to return it. Hopefully after a few weeks I'll be able to watch it again... certainly by September.

Friday is a very special day! Can you guess what it is? I've got a quick fanfic in the works for it! (And I have the day off work, too!)
I'm also going to my Grandma's tomorrow and hanging out with the Toasts for the 4th. Lots of fun.

(I know I sound pessimistic and whiny, but he did this very thing about 4 hours ago when I told him that I want to buy the Harry Potter RiffTrax because the Harry Potter movies are horrific. I am very sick of my father telling me that my interests are invalid unless he shares them and/or tells me what they should be. But I am comforted, because he had to go into a video rental store on his own and check out Twilight, a stain which will never be erased from his video rental card memory.)
Speaking of vampire romances, Mom and I finished True Blood. Is something wrong with me? Why do I seem to be the only person on earth who's turned on by equal partnerships? Can't we both wear pants? Or skirts? I really like skirts.
But I'll do a seperate post to explain why vampires besides the clitter kind tend towards the made-of-fail once they get involved with lonely and abrasive human women.
I've been trying to find a list of the songs in Princess Tutu. I found one that looks fairly comprehensive, but I'm not sure if that's true... or even if it IS a list of songs, since it's entirely in Japanese except for the German bits. (The WIkipedia article on Princess Tutu is severely lacking. I call on someone with some knowledge of ballet to correct this immediately!)
In any case, my quest lead me to watching Fantasia clips on YouTube, and now I really want to see Fantasia again. (I'd forgotten the part where all the dinosaurs die.) Also, I have the sheet music for Blue Danube on the piano. I've been wanting something to learn to play really well before my fingers rust from spending all my time online and I forget whatever it is that I've learned, so that's a fun project for me.
So, that's what's shaking on my end. Music that inspires ducks to turn into prima donnas and new-age MST.

Spent all week baking for Epic Teaparty.
See, I figure that 20 means that I'm an adult, and I get to decide what that means.
So, Epic Teaparty, I spent all week baking, and then Mom and Dad helped me move our table out into the backyard, and the Nuances and I dressed up pretty and had tea.
Actually, that's a lie. Emmy and I dressed up pretty, Merrill dressed like a rave!stripper with EPIC red furry leg warmers, Taffy dressed up for a nice Women's Society Tea with LSD and Brad wore a tie and a t-shirt.
Anyway, because I spent so much time on it, here's the menu:
Blackberry turnovers (or "Fruity Hotpockets" as Brad put it)
Almond cake with chocolate frosting (Actually, the frosting was just sour cream and chocolate chips... It didn't taste like it at all.)
Chocolate ravioli (which we all agreed was "interesting" but nothing to rave about.)
Cucumber sandwiches (of course)
Bruschetta (which was delicious!)
Tea. (Yeah)
And it was good. First time I've had a birthday party in my backyard since I was a little girl.
Emmy got me a harlequin romance called "A Night with the Rebel Billionaire." It's fantastic. It contains the most painful-sounding consensual, non-kinky sex scene I have had the honor to read.
Taffy got me volume 33 of Naruto. I now have vol. 3, 4, 5, and 33. (Nothing particularly happens in vol. 33... she just got an extra copy by accident and decided to unload it on me.) Also a borders gift certificate, which is nice. ^^
We hung out at my place, then Merrill got hot in her stripper outfit, so we went back to her place to change and play with her puppy... and then back to my place for bad pr0nz, and then the House of Wines for dinner (Taffy got some lasagna which turned out to be a problem later on down the road), and then to Wal*Mart for hangin' around.
Found some bird earrings! It's so hard to find bird-themed stuff. It's all butterflies and stuff. XP Nobody loves my muffins. Also, there was a DeathNote T-shirt for sale there, and that scared me because... well... I DON'T WANNA BE MAINSTREAM!
I realize that with all the geeks from the 80s and 90s, the ones who know the 'tubes, growing up, that nerdy is going to become the norm, but I'm just not ready for that day. (Well, maybe a little...) I 've just gotten so used to being a subculture.
So, today was my birthday and father's day... so naturally nothing of great interest happened. Made a pear chiffon pie for him. Almost screwed that up royal, which put me in a bad mood, but I was tired and burnt out, and having to wake up on my birthday to go to Dad's church (which wasn't so bad, really) did nothing to help my mood.
But Dad and I went on a bike ride and that was good... and then I went to mom's and slept, and that was also good.
...and Mom made me a chocolate cake with chocolate filling and chocolate buttercream... Yeah. That was good.
In non-birthday news, I'm feeling a little out-of-place now that Cloud does things. Cloud used to be Hyuugaphile-exclusive territory (which was mildly ironic), and now Cloud is something that everybody knows about. Tsk.
So, um... Yeah. I'm 20 now... and I have a nice fetish for bad pr0nz, and one day I'm going to wake up and be completely average.

Anyway, my mom finished her exams today, so we watched two episodes of Princess Tutu and I'm better now. (Princess Tutu is about the best thing on earth.)
Today I walked down to the library to return Neverwhere (Oh my god! Neverwhere is AMAZING!!! I read it in less than a week!), and then I went looking for some Diana Wynne Jones (as you do)... and the library apparently closes early on Fridays, so they announced that they would be closing in three minutes, so I thought I would just grab a book and check it out real quick and figure out what I was reading later...
And this librarian comes by, looks at me, and says (and I quote) "They're turning off the computers in three minutes. You don't have time to check that out."
She more-or-less told me to put the book down NOW and get out. Which I understand... I mean, who wants to stay overtime on Friday? but still, it was almost comically pathetic, that I got snapped at to stop reading by a librarian. It wasn't a big deal at all, but mom and I got a kick out of it.
Katie: When you're a librarian, just say "The library is closing soon." or "You may not have time to check that out." Not "We're closing. Get out." ...but I don't think I need to tell you that. ^^
By the way, friends at school: I miss all of you guys so much!!!! It's contributing to my weirdly-angry mood.

If Twilight, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Vampire Knight got together and had a wild, drunken orgy on the set of Interview with a Vampire, the photos that showed up on Facebook the next day would be True Blood.
I didn't say I didn't like it, note. We're ordering the next disc. It was definitely interesting and well done, and that's something coming from someone who is so completely jaded by the Vampire Romance genre in general. (Unless it's MalXPolly, of course!)
I do gotta say, though, I'm surprised Stephanie Meyer didn't sue their ass for the Lead-Character-Can-Read-Everyone's-Thoug
Also, just as a little side rant, I thought I'd say something positive about Twilight. I've never read Twilight. I have no intention to ever read Twilight. But I watched the movie and I've had the plot told to me.
So I'm gonna say this:
I think the sparkling vampires is a really original, clever, and interesting idea. It's totally new, it makes sense enough, and it proves that a little thought and creativity went into the whole thing.
It's a romance. It's not exceptionally well written or anything, but it's romantic. It's a teen vampire romance, what do you really want from it? People don't read it for the plot or the magnificent characters. They read it 'cause they want a nice escapist fantasy about a girl not very different from them who just happens to have the coolest selection of weird boyfriends ever. Get over it.
(I'm talking, of course, about the first book. The last three are creepy and disgusting and it disturbs me greatly that a whole group of preteen girls really think that love means jumping off cliffs and having babies eaten out of your uterus. But other than that, whatever.)
Right, so that's Kallie's view on Vampire Romance. (my little brother just said "Vampire Bromance" and I think that sounds like the coolest thing ever. I'd read that.)

Well, to pass the time until AnimeBoston, I've been reading manga besides Naruto. Crazy, amirite?
So, I'm now up-to-date on, and would like to encourage you to read:
SoulEater: He's a human-scythe piano player with an inner demon. She's a bad-ass bookworm with a legacy to live up to. They fight crime! (As do all their friends, who have similar hilarious things that can be said of them.)
Kuroshitsuji: He's a cynical young nobleman looking for redemption. He's a demon butler tied to him through a powerful contract. They fight crime!
and
Solanin: He's an average young man with a band. She's an average young woman questioning happiness. They don't fight crime, this is a short slice-of-life manga!
A note on SoulEater: Spoiler Alert! Maka's brain grows back and she stops acting like a pansy! Best news of the anime season!
A note on Kuroshitsuji: I'm a culinary nerd. It's full of pastries (Ciel has a demon butler and uses him pretty much the way I would... ie to feed me stuff). It makes me very, very happy.
I'm already planning out a cake to make when I get home.

He's a fast talking dishevelled hairdresser on a mission from God. She's a blind gold-digging pearl diver operating on the wrong side of the law. They fight crime!
He's a lonely gay vagrant with a secret. She's a plucky antique-collecting single mother with an MBA from Harvard. They fight crime!
She's a sarcastic internet pirate with a taste for trolling. She's an awkward fanfic-writer overcome by an obsession with the Hyuugas. They fight crime! They're not very good at it!
The first one's my favorite. I'd read that.
Also, Soul Eater is kinda amazing and everyone should read it. (Although I should warn you ahead of time that it's not really "only 61 chapters", because all of the chapters are a soul-sucking 40 pages long.)

We're 98% sure how I'm getting to Anime Boston and who's going to feed me in the meantime.
I have a baked potato.
I should be revising my creative writing portfolio, which is difficult because I have no desire to look at any of the pieces I wrote ever again. This is made more worrisome by the haunting notion that he's grading this based on the effort we put into revising. (Not really fair: I can't help it that everything I write is completely perfect the first time.)
I bought a RiffTrax short yesterday: Drugs are like that. It's about two intensely-stupid amnesiac children playing with legos and comparing drug use to harmless things, like babies.
I own the Repo! soundtrack now. I listen to it when I'm taking out the trash. I like to burst into the kitchenette and pretend that instead of taking out trash, I'm actually disemboweling Buckland residents who didn't pay GeneCo and think that their used Kleenex are recycleable. Oh, and that the stairwell is an appropriate place to leave half-eaten bananas.
It is a little awkward when I burst into the room, arms waving passionately to express the great emotional turmoil that Nathan and I are feeling, and notice suddenly that there's a girl in there microwaving her EZ-Mac and that she's staring at me, clearly very concerned at my behavior. (This is a true story.)

Good news;
-Alisa and I have a GREAT room next year. It's in S. Rocky, and it's got a really nice window and more space than we really honestly need. I'm a little apprehensive to be back in the Rockies, to be honest. I feel like without the old crowd there, it won't be the same. And it's mostly singles, too.
